UFC 193: Holly Holm Knocks Out Ronda Rousey, Captures UFC Title

As it turns out, nobody is unbeatable in mixed martial arts—not even the UFC’s golden girl.

In what was arguably the biggest upset in MMA history, UFC bantamweight title challenger Holly Holm shocked Ronda Rousey to capture the belt in front of a massive crowd in Melbourne.

Rousey, a 20 to 1 favorite in recent days to win the fight, was completely out of her element against Holm, a former multiple-time boxing world champion. Rousey’s coach has heaped praise on his pupil’s boxing game in recent months, but it became clear from the beginning of the fight that she was no match for Holm in that department.

Rousey continually rushed in with wild, winging punches, and Holm used crisp and efficient counterpunching to batter and bruise her from the beginning of the fight. It was a brilliant game plan executed to perfection by Holm, who was taken to the ground—where Rousey is the most dangerous woman in the world—but was able to escape almost immediately. Rousey, flustered that she wasn’t able to control the fight, grew more and more wild, giving away the first round to Holm as her face grew red and puffy from Holm’s strikes.

In the second round, it was more of the same until Holm landed a huge left head kick that sent Rousey crashing unconscious to the canvas. Holm followed her down and landed two punches before referee Herb Dean called a stop to the fight.

“I don’t know, I’m trying to take it all in. This is crazy!” Holm said. “Getting in here, I just felt so much support — I thought, ‘How can I not do this with all this support?’ I had the best coaching, from standup to grappling to wrestling.

“I have to say, everything we worked on presented itself in the fight. Every grab she tried to get, on the cage — I have not spent this much time in the gym before any fight in my life.”

At the post-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White said that a rematch between Holm and Rousey makes the most sense.

Per UFC officials, 56,214 people were in Etihad Stadium for the upset. It was the largest attendance in UFC history.

MAIN CARD
Pay-per-view, 10 p.m. ET

Holly Holm d. Ronda Rousey by KO, round 2: Well, this was possibly the most perfect performance in UFC history. Holly Holm, a massive underdog to Rousey’s throne, used a brilliant gameplan to batter and destroy the longtime champion from the opening bell. Using counter striking and crisp boxing, Holm exposed huge holes in Rousey’s striking game, bloodying her before the end of the first. In the second round, it was more of the same, and then Holm knocked Rousey to the canvas with a giant head kick. A few punches later, and it was over. Holly Holm is your new UFC bantamweight champion.

Joanna Jedrzejczyk d. Valerie Letourneau by unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 50-45): In the early rounds, this was a much closer fight than I and many others expected. But as the fight wore on, Jedrzejczyk’s far superior striking took over and she began to batter Letourneau with brilliant straight punches and counter striking. Not the utterly dominant performance Jedrzejczyk needed to become a bigger star, but still a clinic from the champion.

Mark Hunt d. Antonio Silva by KO, round 1: The new, improved, much smaller Hunt looked great tonight. He was much faster than usual and clearly still generates monstrous power at heavyweight. He nailed Silva with a big straight right behind the ear, and Silva essentially fell flat on his face. A punch or two on the ground and it was over.

Robert Whittaker d. Uriah Hall by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28): As he’s known to sometimes do, Hall started off far too slowly, spending much of the first two rounds allowing Whittaker to do whatever he wanted. In the third, he turned up the heat, but it was too little, too late. Very big win for Whittaker here, who is quickly turning into one of the UFC’s best prospects.

Jared Rosholt d. Stefan Struve by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28): The less said about this one, the better. This was one of the worst fights in recent memory, just a lethargic, slow, awful fight that completely sucked the life out of the building. Or, in other words, just like every Jared Rosholt fight ever.
